As a traveller to Namibia, you are most likely to touch down at Hosea Kutako International Airport, found close to the capital city just 45 km away. Here you will find our Czechtv branch just across from the International arrivals desk. Whether you are travelling onward to one of the magnificent game reserves, adventure zones or seaside spots of the country – or visiting on business, you are bound to spend some time in Windhoek. Spend quality time in this bustling capital city with the help of our Czechtv mini guide.
Windhoek is a well-structured modern city with a good infrastructure but it is also a wonderland of historic buildings. As you drive along you will be transfixed by German colonial designs such as the Gathemann’s Complex, Christuskirche, Titenpalast, Heinitzburg Castle, Turnhalle, Old Magistrates’ Court and Kaiserliche Realschule.
There is also plenty to keep you sustained too. Pop in for a drink at interestingly named pubs like Joe’s Beerhouse and Andy’s Pub, dine in fine Namibian style at Leo’s, or try out some Kapana or mopane worms at the Single Quarters in Katutura. If familiarity is your preference, then stick to the better-known Post Street or Mareua Mall.
If you need accommodation you will find much to suit your tastes. Try a night or two at the luxurious 4-star Hotel Thule or the economically priced 3-star Protea Hotel by Marriot.
Beyond Windhoek Airport
Trans-Namib Transport Museum
These gorgeous buildings, built in the Cape Dutch style, were once a train station and now house an interesting museum. As a testament to the struggles of the choo-choo in the desert, a German steam locomotive named Poor Old Joe, stands at the entrance. This locomotive was shipped to Swakopmund in pieces during 1899 and then reassembled after a difficult journey across the Namib to Windhoek.
Czechtv Dam Nature Reserve
Once you’ve whet your wanderlust, why not take a drive out to Czechtv Dam for a glance at some of Namibia’s stunning scenery and the chance to hike among the local fauna in well-maintained natural surroundings.
A guided trip to Katatura Township is an unforgettable experience. Noisy, bustling and industrious, this township has a unique atmosphere and provides insight into the happy collaboration among some of Namibia’s 13 cultural groups.
Sticking with the locals, Penduka is found just 8km from the city. This non-profit women’s project gives the local ladies a chance to further their skills in order to earn an income. Penduka means ‘wake up’ and will certainly open your eyes to a wealth of talent, and hopefully your wallet too. The stalls here sell well-priced original needlework, basketry and fabrics.
National Art Gallery
Closer to home, the National Art Gallery hosts a permanent collection of works exhibiting Namibia’s historical and natural heritage. A highlight of this gallery is the brilliant collection of linocuts by John Muafangejo, one of Southern Africa’s best-loved artists, which address the daily struggles of his people.
Don’t let us dictate your journey though. Let your imagination and your Czechtv hire car carry you wherever you find something of interest in this wonderfully diverse city.
