Unsanitary dental operation ordered to close - testing recommended

August 27, 2014

LA CRETE – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is advising all individuals who received dental services through a residential dental operation located at #11 Parkside Village Mobile Home Park (10306-101 Street, La Crete, AB), and/or from the individual, Maria Friesen (of same address), to be tested for viruses that can be spread through unsanitary dental procedures.

“To prevent the spread of infection from one person to another, equipment used in dental procedures must be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized according to health standards,” says Dr. Albert de Villiers, Medical Officer of Health with the North Zone of AHS. “This particular home-based dental operation did not have these proper sterilization or sanitation processes in place, meaning individuals who received dental services through this operation may have been exposed to viruses including hepatitis B and C, and HIV.”

Anyone who received dental care at #11 Parkside Village Mobile Home Park (10306-101 Street, La Crete, AB) and/or Maria Friesen (of the same address), should call Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-5465 (LINK) to arrange for simple, confidential laboratory blood testing for these viruses. This testing will determine whether the individual has been infected.

AHS ordered the closure of this home-based operation on July 21, 2014. The operator has been unable to provide comprehensive client records to date. As such, AHS is issuing this health advisory as a means of notifying all potentially impacted individuals of this issue, and the need to be tested.

This operation will remain under closure order until such time that it can be operated in a manner that meets all legislative and licensing requirements in Alberta. It is the responsibility of the Alberta Dental Association and College (ADAC) to license dentists practicing in the province of Alberta.

To confirm a dentist is licensed to practice in Alberta, or to file a complaint about a dentist in Alberta, all Albertans can contact the ADAC at 780-432-1012 or toll free 1-800-843-3848. All closure orders issued by AHS can be viewed online.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
