Days 1-3: Kruger National ParkDay 1 is for shopping and preparation. Day 2 you’ll head out to the world renowned Kruger National Park. Once you have reached the Kruger, you will meet Africa’s unique wild animals in their own backyard and experience the Big Five, and the Little Five, in 22 million hectares of undisturbed pristine natural African bush. Spend the next three days exploring the back roads of Kruger overnighting in safe bush camps as you head towards Northern part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
Days 4-6: Gonarezhou National ParkGonarezhou National Park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP), a massive Pan-African Park that includes South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park and Mozambique’s Gaza. This huge area is set to become one of the finest “peace parks” in the world and is dedicated to conservation, biodiversity and the economic development of the surrounding local communities. One of the most prominent and enduring natural features of Gonarezhou National Park is the beautiful Chilojo Cliffs. These magnificent red sandstone cliffs have been formed through eons of erosion and overlook the scenic Runde River valley.
Spend the next two days on an extended game drive doing every ones “Bucket list” items - Kruger from Top to Bottom!
Day 7-8: Kruger Top to Bottom
Day 9: SwazilandTransit out of Kruger Park and a short stop in Malalane to top up your pantry. From here you’ll enjoy the very interesting Geo Trail as you head into Swaziland for your next night stop at a private game reserve camp. Flora includes the massive riverine forests with towering sycamore figs and wild date palms, rocky cliffs, knobthorn savannah, acacia bushveld and open grasslands. A number of unique species are found in the area. The views around the reserve are diverse and breathe-taking.
Head north to Santa Maria via the Maputo Elephant Reserve a 50 000 hectare mosaic of lakes, floodplains, mangrove swamps, woodlands and forested dunes sweeping down to unspoilt beaches.
Day 10-11: Mozambique
The Reserve was once a sanctuary to large herds of elephant, white rhino and a variety of other game species, but poaching during the civil war reduced animal numbers considerably. The entire white rhino population of 65 animals, introduced from the iMfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province in 1967 was wiped out, while the elephant population decreased from an estimated 350 in 1971 to a mere 120 by the late 1980’s.
Explore the Bay of Maputo with a traditional dhow to Inhaca and Portuguese Island. Take a sun set trip at high tide to the inland estuary on Inhaca. The bay has lots of flamingos and other water birds that wade in the shallow water.
Days 12-14: Mozambique and Kosi BayDay 12 takes you south to the quaint little town of Ponta do Ouroa to swim in the Indian Ocean and lunch on the beach. After lunch you’ll exit Mozambique into South Africa and arrive at a Kosi Bay Campsite nestled amongst 100 year old Water berry trees.
Kosi Bay in the far North Eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal forms part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park - the first natural World Heritage Site in South Africa to be accorded this distinction. Kosi Bay epitomises the incredible splendour of untouched Africa at its most pristine, as are its people, resources, ecology and culture.
Kosi Bay is a system of an estuary with 4 lakes ranging from freshwater to saline that feed into the ocean.
Age old traditions passed down by generations of tribal existence still continue to this day - ancient fishing kraals erected and tendered by the resourceful Tonga people. Kosi Bay has been described as “A wonderful aquarium and the most gorgeous aviary”.
